While <strong data-start=\"1506\" data-end=\"1542\">Midwest Premium prices rose by 164%,<\/strong> the U.S. smelting industry experienced a resurgence.<br data-start=\"1603\" data-end=\"1606\">Companies such as <strong data-start=\"1620\" data-end=\"1631\">Century<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"1635\" data-end=\"1644\">Alcoa<\/strong> restarted shut down capacity, and there is even talk of the <strong data-start=\"1717\" data-end=\"1771\">first new aluminum smelter in the US in 45 years<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1781\" data-end=\"1836\">Europe \u2013 scrap loss, metal surplus<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1837\" data-end=\"2143\">For Europe, the rate increase has the opposite effect.<br data-start=\"1902\" data-end=\"1905\">Exports of European aluminium scrap to the United States increased by <strong data-start=\"1970\" data-end=\"2005\">around 270% in 2025<\/strong> \u2013 a fivefold increase compared to the previous year.<br data-start=\"2062\" data-end=\"2065\">Recyclers are now warning of a shortage of secondary raw materials.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2145\" data-end=\"2419\">At the same time, the European market is <strong data-start=\"2184\" data-end=\"2220\">flooded with primary aluminium<\/strong> that can no longer be exported to the US.<br data-start=\"2272\" data-end=\"2275\">Major producers from <strong data-start=\"2297\" data-end=\"2339\">Canada, Australia and the Middle East<\/strong> have diverted their deliveries to European ports, including Rotterdam.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2629\" data-end=\"2670\">Canada \u2013 looking for new markets<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2671\" data-end=\"2977\">Canada, for years the main supplier of aluminum to the United States, has lost a large part of its traditional sales.<br data-start=\"2816\" data-end=\"2819\">Hundreds of thousands of tonnes of Canadian aluminium are now finding their way to <strong data-start=\"2885\" data-end=\"2914\">the Netherlands, Italy and Asia<\/strong>, markedly shifting the trade balance within Europe.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2984\" data-end=\"3051\">Middle East, South America and Asia \u2013 redistribution of flows<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3052\" data-end=\"3418\">The effects are also significant outside North America.<br data-start=\"3100\" data-end=\"3103\">Producers in the <strong data-start=\"3121\" data-end=\"3174\">United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Brazil<\/strong> are shifting their exports to Asia and Europe.<br data-start=\"3220\" data-end=\"3223\">Some companies are going one step further: the <strong data-start=\"3270\" data-end=\"3305\">Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA)<\/strong> announced billion-dollar investments in new smelting capacity in the US itself, to circumvent the tariff barrier.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3420\" data-end=\"3712\">China, on the other hand, is struggling with rising scrap prices, as U.S. buyers pay better than Chinese importers.<br data-start=\"3541\" data-end=\"3544\">In <strong data-start=\"3547\" data-end=\"3556\">India<\/strong> , the industry is expanding \u2013 <strong data-start=\"3589\" data-end=\"3600\">Vedanta<\/strong> is increasing production at BALCO, and <strong data-start=\"3637\" data-end=\"3649\">Hindalco<\/strong> is increasing output to take advantage of the changed market.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4752\" data-end=\"5113\">The 2025 U.S. tariff hike has not only changed the direction of global trade, but also upset the <strong data-start=\"4867\" data-end=\"4918\">balance between primary and secondary aluminum<\/strong> .<br data-start=\"4929\" data-end=\"4932\">The consequences \u2013 higher prices in the US, lower premiums in Europe, shifting trade routes and new investments \u2013 mark a new phase in the global aluminium industry.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5115\" data-end=\"5221\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How Trump&#8217;s New 50% Tariffs Reshuffle the Global Aluminum Landscape Since the introduction of the new tariffs, imports of primary aluminum into the U.S. have fallen by about 26%.
