Aluminium weight calculator
Need the weight of an aluminium order before you request a quote? This aluminium weight calculator gives the theoretical weight and tonnage of plate, tread plate, coil, bar, tube and extrusions, per alloy. Use it to estimate order and freight weight or to build a project calculation. Add every line item to the project list for the total weight of your order and send the list to us as a quote request. Euralco Europe supplies on request and with minimum order quantities, for project procurement and larger volumes.
How the aluminium weight calculator works
Weight is volume multiplied by density. Choose the product form and the alloy, enter the dimensions and the calculator shows the weight per piece, per metre or per m², plus the total weight in kilograms and tonnes. It covers plate and sheet, tread plate, coil, round, square, flat and hexagon bar, tube and the common extrusion profiles.
Aluminium plate weight and sheet weight per m²
Plate weight is thickness × width × length × density. Per square metre, that is simply the thickness in millimetres multiplied by the density: at 2.70 g/cm³, 1 mm of aluminium sheet weighs 2.70 kg/m². A plate of 10 × 1500 × 3000 mm therefore weighs about 121.5 kg. Alloys from the 5000 series are slightly lighter.
| Thickness (mm) | Weight per m² (kg) at 2.70 g/cm³ |
|---|---|
| 1 | 2.70 |
| 2 | 5.40 |
| 3 | 8.10 |
| 5 | 13.50 |
| 8 | 21.60 |
| 10 | 27.00 |
| 20 | 54.00 |
Aluminium extrusion and profile weight
For extrusions, the aluminium weight calculator first works out the cross-section and then multiplies it by the length and the density. Rectangular tube: height × width − inner height × inner width. Angle: (leg A + leg B − thickness) × thickness. Channel: height × thickness + 2 × (flange width − thickness) × thickness. T-section: (width + height − thickness) × thickness. An angle of 50 × 50 × 5 mm weighs about 1.28 kg per metre at 2.70 g/cm³. The calculator assumes sharp corners; corner radii make a real profile slightly lighter or heavier.
Aluminium coil weight
Coil weight is π/4 × (outer diameter² − inner diameter²) × strip width × density. A coil of 2 mm thickness and 1250 mm width, with an inner diameter of 508 mm and an outer diameter of 1400 mm, weighs about 4,511 kg at 2.70 g/cm³. The aluminium weight calculator also gives the strip length on the coil, in this case about 668 metres.
Aluminium bar and tube weight
A round bar weighs π/4 × diameter² × length × density, so a 50 mm round bar weighs about 5.30 kg per metre. A round tube weighs π/4 × (outer diameter² − inner diameter²) × length × density; a 60 × 5 mm tube weighs about 2.33 kg per metre. Square, flat and hexagon bar are calculated the same way.
Aluminium tread plate weight
Tread plate, also known as checker plate or diamond plate, is usually specified by base thickness and thickness including the pattern, for example 2.5/4 mm. The pattern adds material compared with flat plate of the same base thickness. For tread plate the calculator uses EN AW-5754 H114 with an indicative allowance for the pattern. The exact weight per m² depends on the producer's tread pattern; we state it in our quotation.
Density per alloy
Density varies by alloy. 5000-series alloys (AlMg) are slightly lighter than pure aluminium, 2000- and 7000-series alloys slightly heavier. The differences look small, but on projects of tens of tonnes they add up. The aluminium weight calculator uses an indicative reference density for each alloy. If your alloy is not listed, you can enter the density yourself.
Total tonnage for orders and freight
Project procurement rarely involves a single plate or profile. The project list in the aluminium weight calculator lets you add every line item of an order, for example plate in several thicknesses, extrusions and coils. You see the total weight in kilograms and tonnes straight away, which helps when planning transport, checking crane and floor loads or comparing quotations. Use the quote button to send the complete list to us in one go.
Weight also determines the metal value of your order. See today's aluminium price per tonne in euros and US dollars, with the price trend and monthly averages.
Theoretical versus actual weight
The result is a theoretical weight based on nominal dimensions and sharp corners. It does not take thickness tolerances or other dimensional tolerances into account, so the delivered weight will differ in practice, as it does with corner radii on profiles and the pattern on tread plate. For a binding calculation, supply to the required EN specification and material certificates to EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2, please contact us. Through our international production network we also supply plate, extrusions and coils in large volumes for project procurement.
Aluminium weight: frequently asked questions
How do I calculate aluminium weight without a calculator?
Multiply the volume by the density. If you work in millimetres, divide the volume in mm³ by 1,000,000 and multiply by the density in g/cm³ (about 2.70). The result is the weight in kilograms.
What is the density of aluminium?
Pure aluminium (aluminum in US spelling) has a density of about 2.70 g/cm³, which is 2,700 kg/m³ or 0.0975 lb/in³. Aluminium alloys are generally between about 2.65 and 2.85 g/cm³, depending on the alloying elements.
What is the aluminium sheet weight per m²?
About 2.7 kg per millimetre of thickness. One square metre of 5 mm aluminium sheet therefore weighs about 13.5 kg.
How much does a 2000 × 1000 mm aluminium sheet weigh?
At 3 mm thickness, about 16.2 kg. For other sizes, the aluminium plate weight follows from 2.7 kg per m² per millimetre of thickness.
How does the weight of aluminium compare with steel?
Aluminium weighs roughly a third of steel, which has a density of about 7.85 g/cm³.
Can I order single sheets or profiles?
No. Euralco Europe supplies on request and with minimum order quantities, for project procurement and larger volumes. Send us your project list with the quote button and we will let you know what is possible.
How accurate is this aluminium weight calculator?
It gives the theoretical weight based on nominal dimensions. Thickness tolerances are not included, so the delivered weight can differ, as it does with corner radii.
Global sourcing and supply
At Euralco Europe B.V. we believe that quality, security of supply and competitive pricing are the result of a strong international supply chain. That is why we source our aluminium worldwide through our international production network of carefully selected producers. We always look for the best option for our customers, whether that means material from the Netherlands, elsewhere in Europe or other parts of the world.
Our international production network
Through our international production network we can:
- Extrude profiles in the 6000 and 7000 series (including 6061, 6082, 7010, 7075 and 7175), custom-designed to our customers' requirements.
- Supply plate and coil from production, including special widths and stress-relieved grades for yacht building and shipbuilding.
- Process coils by decoiling, slitting and cutting to length, so we deliver exactly the dimensions our customers need in their production.
- Offer advanced processing through specialised service centres, such as laser-cut kits, machined parts and surface treatments.
By working with both large international producers and specialised niche producers, we combine the advantages of scale with the flexibility of custom production.
